Abstract
The purpose of this study was to compare the characteristics of upper extremity injuries according to injury mechanisms such as skiing and snowboarding. From December 2003 to March 2004, we enrolled the 69 patients of upper extremities injury among total 280 patients who were transferred to our Emergency Department from two ski resorts. Among 69 patients, 22 patients were skiers and 47 were snowboarders. The most common type of injuries was a fracture in both groups. The common site of injuries were shoulder (32% vs. 39%) and wrist (32% vs. 37%) in both skiing and snowboarding. The fracture on the left side happened more frequently than the right side in both groups. Fractures and sprains of the wrist were more common in snowboarding injuries than skiing injuries.
